Join an Unschooling Conference This Weekend

There are some good unschooling conferences this coming weekend, and if you are able to travel to MA or TX I think you'll enjoy these:

The Northeast Unschooling Conference

Rethinking Everything

In addition to these, I'm co-chairing the Homeschool Conference, a free, online event on August 23 and 24, 2013. This inaugural conference is our (Steve Hargadon and Pat Farenga) attempt to bring together a variety of groups and people who have a genuine interest in helping children learn in their own ways and schedules, rather than forcing children to learn what economists, politicians, and educators have decided they should know at any given age. We created this event rather quickly this year, but we decided we had to give it a shot and bring it to life on our own rather than continue to wait for sponsorship and the perfect moment.

Please tell your friends about this event and come and participate in one of the many presentations being given. You can listen to all the talks after the event—we're recording them all for free playback online—but if you want to ask questions and be part of the conversation do join us this weekend when you can.

My keynote is about The Legacy of John Holt and I'll talk about the creation of this book, some new insights I learned about Holt, the man and the thinker from my work and interviews for this book, and my thoughts about the future of learning and childhood as schools continue down the path of standardization and homeschooling continues to emphasize individualization.

Other keynotes include:
